Hey Guys,

Ordered a F131 this week. 6700, 2wd raptors ( raid 0 ), 2gb ram, xi fi, 1k PSU ( in case I want to go SLI later ) Also, 24" Dell widescreen.

Will definitely need to upgrade the 350w APC for the new rig. Florida power like to burp alot.

What Watt UPS should I get and are there any that provide clean power... as in it's run transformers I believe to filter the power, more than just power surges, but provide exactly the same correct out put?

Thanks

XBarbarian,

To answer your questions we need a little information first. In order to recommend what Watt UPS you need we need to know what type of power supply you got on your rig. Was it a 750, 1000? We definitely recommend anything from APC so you’re on the right track by having them to begin with.

I went with 1000 watt

So, with that, and having a dell 24" widescreen attached as well, I should go with a 1000watt UPS?

I'll browse APC's site.

It makes sense to look for a unit that provides clean power conditioner as well.

Barbarian,

You may want to check out other vendors besides Dell and compare prices. I'd try http://www.newegg.com or http://www.tigerdirect.com.

(I have no connections to either seller, but have ordered computer parts and other computer accessories from both. Good customer service and return policies).

Gonna call APC today. I was o their site, used their wizard and it errored out! said to call.

"conditioned "power is the main thing, because power rarely goes out here, it just hiccups. And finding a unit that smooths out magnetic frequencies etc is good.
The APC Backup LS 700, or 500 should do the trick. APC has the AVR - auto volt regulation - which is basic "conditioning" I believe. Of course, their high end Home Theater stuff - $500+ - is truly smooth even power..but that may be a lil more expensive than I need, as that usit doeasn't really have the power battery wise, and also seems to target the guys with the 10,000$ cd players - i.e. overkill becasue they can in that market - Audiophiles. LOL

O..and I looked at newegg etc for LCD's. Quite frankly I don't think anyone really touches the Dell 24" Ultrasharp for that price, atm. Last I looked, was $719. Samsung's etc..all 899+ and everything I've read, the Dell reviews nicely. However, paying for my F131 is first, so I haven't ordered the Monitor yet..if anyone has a suggestion, I'm down for that!

XBarbarian-

As a follow up, Dell just dropped their price to $674 on the 24" monitor.
This was probably in response to Gateway's new 24" being offered at $679. A review of the Dell and Gateway 24s can be found at
http://www.extremetech.com/article2/0,1697,2078856,00.asp
(the Dell review is linked at the end of the Gateway review). With the price drop, I'm rethinking my purchase of a 22" monitor since I'd like to get the 1920 X 1200 resolution.

From your prior post, you've probably done your due diligence, the extreme tech article just offers a convenient side by side comparison.

Sweet! Glad I didn't put the money down yet! lower prices = winner! $$

Luckily the guys at MG have been cool on splitting the pay into 2 bites..my only card is a MC check card, and my freakin Credit union won't allow more than $2000 a day purchases, and that was special approval, so pd mg 2k today and another 2k Monday, tues the balance...grr anyway..then Ii can order the monitor. Maybe it will go even lower by then *nods*

Ok. Called and spoke to APC

After giving some info on my ordered system, the rep suggested BR1500 ( retail $259.obviously cheaper on the web ) or the better Smart Ups sua1500 ( $550..same..found cheaper on the web )

In plowing thru review forums, the br1500 is good back up, provides a level of power conditioning, but is stepped. Thats the difference. the more expensive sua1500 provides a pure SINE wave, which is allot cleaner output ( Conditioned )

Will probably go with the more expensive model, and wait for Tax $$, as clean power also contributes to system longevity, as in unclean power is the leading cause of mechanical / electrical failure.

So, I guess my standard surge protector is no good. I think I just saw more money fly out the window.

try looking into Ultra's UPS http://www.ultraproducts.com/product_reviews.php?cPath=35&pPath=154&productID=448
Ive been using this one for about a month and its caught 5 hiccups so far with no problems. Doesnt seem to run as hot as my previous UPS.

I will check em out!

More reading and research has me back to the good Quality UPS, not the $500. As most have said, whether it's a good APC with the "AVR" or whatever Ultra uses to clean power, thats the main thing.

Hey Ella! How's the system?

I finally went with a CyberPower model linked below. I wanted to go with APC, Belkin or Tripp Lite, but just liked the features and general layout better with this model. Reviews from Newegg customers were all quite positive and glowing too.

So what did you decide on this? I started looking and got quite confused? Any recommendations?

I bought the APC XS1500 I think it is, off the top of my head, from work, not at the system. has 1500va power, and most importantly, AVR ( automated Voltage Regulation ) which minimizes spikes, but just as importantly, adds power when it drops below tolerances ( brown out 0. it provides a more consistent power stream, which a surge protector can't do

Thanks XBarbarian I'll check it out. I really think my new computer will deserve some clean power.

It ships this Friday! :heyea:

The one I chose is linked several posts above this one (CyberPower 1500AVR LCD). It only runs at 33% capacity with my 24" widescreen, big-ass M-Audio speakers, Router, cable modem, and 1 KW-rated MG hooked to it. According to the readout, I have about 29 minutes when I pull the plug (or the power dies).

I am going to go for the APC RS model (1500VA, AVR). I think RS may have replaced the XS line. I found it shipped for under 200 bucks at someplace called PC Nation. http://www.pcnation.com/web/details.asp?item=M22044

whorton5 - I am glad to hear you are only running at 33% with all that stuff plugged in. I wondered how much strain my system would provide, but that sounds like it'll be no problemo.
