Well, I have finally had a chance to really sit down and play with the new system now that I have it installed and running in my home theater. Some of you may have seen my other posts talking about doing this as well as a minor issue I previously had that seems to be fixed now.

Prior to purchasing my F131, I had been running an old Dell Desktop that I would use to play music and occasionally watch movies on my home entertainment system. It seemed to do the job just fine at the time, however I had not been exposed to a "real" home theater pc yet, or a desktop PC that had been built specifically for the application. Eventually the Dell died on me and I ended up giving it away knowing that my next system would be far more capable than the clunky old Dell Optiplex.

After patiently waiting for the last 6 months, I finally had the opportunity to order my new system and I read many reviews online about many different companies. The one that really stuck with me was cnet's review of the F131 and how well it did compared to the other "top tier" PCs out there. I also found a lot of information here on MG's forums that gave me the confidence to go ahead and order my new F131 without any hesitations.

When it finally showed up at my front door, I felt like a little school girl, I couldn't wait to open the box and start playing with the "Beast" for the first time (no punn intended). I only had about an hour to set it up and fool around before I had to leave to go to a birthday party for a friend, so I wasn't planning on getting too involved at that point. Just before we were supposed to leave, I rebooted the system after installing a windows update and I was no longer able to receive a video signal, a little concerned, I powered down the system, unplugged the power cord, and left for the party.

The next day, the system powered right back up and everything appeared to be fine. I spent a couple of hours playing around and then decided I was tired of sitting on my floor next to my Samsung 61" DLP I am using as a display so that I could explore the new machine. As a result, I got back to work on the entertainment center I had previously started in anticipation of the new rig.

I wanted to build in my receiver, satellite receiver, Klipsch center channel speaker, and finally run all of my surround sound for the rest of the room. The new PC was just the motivation I needed because I didn't want to see it sitting on the floor next to the TV knowing that it would be constantly ****ing up all of the dust bunnines off of the floor like it was the most expensive vacuum cleaner ever purchased.

I tried to upload some pictures here but for some reason it is telling me that I am unable to because I have exceded my quota even though the .jpg images are much smaller than the maximum allowed. I will try again later.

Just as expected, the system performs beautifully. My Blu Ray movies are unbelievable to watch and the sound is awesome. I have the display configured for 1080i to my Samsung DLP and the audio out of the Soundblaster Titanium Fatal1ty card is also quite impressive. Also, the LG Super-Multi Blu drive seems to do a great job of upconverting standard def movies when ompared to watching them on my Xbox 360.

The only other issues I have had was with my raid configuration and that was quickly resolved with MG's support by rebuilding the raid array, and I can't get the higher resolutions to work in Crysis: Warhead. When I set up the resolution in the game to match my 1080i display, the image seems fine, however the cursor image on the screen doesn't match up with where it actually is when clicking on objects in the menus. I'll figure that out later.

Again, I'll try to post some pictures later on.

Looks fantastic, things are not running warn in the system at all? Just making sure it has plenty of air flow.

Very nice setup! I have one question, did you go with the F131 over the Axis for a reason (don't know when you ordered so I don't know if both were available). Since I am now employed full time I should have the money to invest in nice toys like this but I don't know if I want to go with a dedicated Home theater PC or a really good desktop to use as a HTPC.

PS-I second Dreamer's question, how's the airflow in that space?

So far it has been running pretty cool but I don't want to take any chances so I ordered a 4" cooling fan with an automatic variable speed controller. It should be here in a couple of days. I plan to mount it in the top of the enclosure and it should help keep the temps down in there if they start to rise. In the summer time, that is the side of the house that gets all of the afternoon sun.

The Axis wasn't out at the time that I purchased my F131.

Thanks for the compliments. I'm thinking of putting a 7" Lilliput touchscreen in the wall just between the receiver and the PC. I mainly want it so that when I throw parties, the guests can select music and add it to the playlist via Windows Media Center.

Does anyone have any experience with the Lilliputl touchscreens and vista 64?

Jeeze you got all the little toys don't ya. Parties must be fun there.

I want to ask you first, can I move this topic to the reviews page. I would like to have it there and when I get around to it catigorize it into the F131 thread. That way it never gets lost and anyone who visits that page will be able to see your lovely pictures. Otherwise I'll just leave it.

I got the cooling fan installed this past weekend and it seems to work great and it was simple to do.

I just used a thermostat that is designed for an attic fan because it is capable of switching on/off 120Vac and wired it up to an outlet inside of the enclosure. Then I just plugged in the cooling fan (found here: http://www.coralvue.com/fans.html). I installed the fan on the bottom side of a 4"x8" vent that I put in the very top of the enclosure.

I adjusted the thermostat to just above room temperature so that when all of the electronics are off and there is not any heat building up in there, the fan will not run. When the PC or my amplifier is turned on, the temps will start to rise and the thermostat will put power to the outlet which turns the fan on to it's minimum speed which is around 65 SCFM. As temperature continues to increase the fan speed will slowly ramp up to 110 SCFM which is it's maximum speed.

If anyone is wondering the total cost for the cooling fan setup is only around $90.

I just ordered a WD Caviar Green 2 TB drive and an additional 3 GB of Kingston HyperX DDR3 - 1600 MHz memory. I can't wait to see how much of a difference it makes going from 3 to 6 GB of memory on this system. When I was ordering it everyone seemed to recommend atleast 6 GB.

Has anyone else with a redlined F131 made this particular upgrade in memory? If so, how much of a difference did you notice?

You may want to give MG a call before installing the extra RAM. If you are filling all of your memory slots, you might have issues with your CPU overclock. Secondly, the x58 chipset does not officially support DDR3 memory running at 1600mhz+ in all 6 slots.

Thanks for the information. I'll definately give them a call. I assumed that it I could just throw it in there since there is an option for 6GB on the website. Do they use 3 - 2GB sticks instead?

I think they use 3 - 2GB sticks because then it would give you 3 extra slots for later.
