I've been playing with the configuration of the Prelude I'll order soon, and I am curious about the Wester Digital HD of 500GB being cheaper than the 400GB. Is not that much (only about 6 bucks), but still, why the 400GB commands a premium over the 500GB? Shouldn't the 500GB be more expensive? Maybe the 500GB is less reliable?

Only reason I can see is the 500 being a more popular order so when demand is high sometimes they can lower costs a bit to ease even more people into buying.

I do not see much differences other than the size of the drive.

Dreamer is correct. The 500gig is a more popular item and therefore can be sold cheaper due to supply and demand.

Now on the other hand if Western Digital wants to starve the market on the 500 gigs knowing everyone wants one, then they can jack the prices, but let's hope that doesn't turn into the case.

Lets hope they start pumping out more terabyte drives to drive the others down, and making larger drives cheaper. This would make way for mass storage systems that are really needed.
