Here's a link to some new info on AoC:
http://www.mmorpg.com/gamelist.cfm/setview/features/loadFeature/1682/gameID/191

What I found interesting is that the UI will be locked down; no hacks, hooks, or 3rd party mods allowed (yay :) ); it will ship with both 32 and 64 bit executables, (and with DX9 and10 of course); and that there will be no open beta. Instead of open beta, they plan to invite more and more folks into closed beta. Launch is still planned for 3.25.08.

It's gonna be hard, if not impossible, for this game to live up to the hype, but I'm hoping it will be a pretty good game, none the less.

I'm keeping an eye on it as well. My biggest concern is that it won't be casual-gamer friendly, particularly at the later levels where you are trying to build forts, etc. I just don't have the hours these days to dedicate to MMOs, so if I can't jump in and play for an hour and feel like I had fun and accomplished something, I'll be passing this one by.

There has been some discussion on this and of course I don't have a definitive answer. What I do know is that the seige battles won't just be guild vs guild (only guilds can build battlekeeps). Guilds will have to recruit mercenaries, i.e. non-guild players, to help them in the battle. Plus, battlekeeps, which are the forts that are open to seige warfare, are only attackable during a certain time window. The guild leader sets the exact time span, but it has to be within parameters set by the game. So, what I'm saying is that it seems like the developers are trying to make every aspect of the game, even the end game which will center around seige warfare, friendly and accessible to all types of players.

I hope that system works. I've been a pretty long-time player of Guild Wars as the closest thing to a casual player-friend MMO, but it just doesn't quite have the depth I like out of MMO. However, after giving WoW a try, I also don't have the hours and hours to invest necessary to really get into the high level end game (and raiding, etc.). I'd kind of like some happy medium between the two. If AoC can deliver something even close to a medium, I'll definitely give it a go.

Isn't a deep MMO that doesn't require a lot of time kind of an oxymoron? :?

It has been forever, or almost. It was supposed to come out about a year ago, but has been delayed twice since then.

I would argue no, though I'd agree that I didn't state my case clearly. It's not that I'm unwilling to put a certain amount of time in playing. What I can't do any more these days (and at my age) is sit for 7-8 hours playing a game, raiding, farming, grinding, whathaveyou. I like the immersiveness and typically large amount of content and options in an MMO (particularly those of the RPG style), but I also want to be able to play and accomplish something in 1-3 hour sittings. Yes, that's a difficult order -- and, like I said earlier, middle of the road -- but it's what I'm hoping for in an MMO someday.
