I've kind of been revisiting Morrowind and Oblivion on my new rig and enjoying those but I really need something new, preferably an RPG along the lines of what these games are like.
Any recommendations? I'm kind of eyeing The Witcher...

My suggestions are Gothic 3, Spellforce 2, and Titan Quest.
Gothic 3 is pretty much similar to the previous successor. Large open ended area of sand boxing basically.
Spellforce 2 mixes the RTS and RPG element together.
Titan Quest is a Diablo clone but Roman themed.

I see a lot of hate out there for this game but I actually liked the demo. Have they patched this thing up enough by now that I could buy it with some confidence?

Nice. :)

I've not seen any hate for this game just avoidance. I've not played G3 or the demo. To be honest Eric, I'm not sure sorry.
Hopefully they have so people can buy and play, stress free.
Yeah, it is :)
Just named these 3 titles because people have heard of them in modern times.
The Witcher would be a good choice, IMO. They have a demo available so you can try it out.

As a long-time Guild Wars player, I'd steer true RPG fans away from that game. Guild Wars is a great game in some respects (and a free-to-play MMO!), but as far as actual roleplaying and character development, it doesn't hold a candle to the true greats in that arena (some of which the original poster mentioned, particularly Morrowind). Guild Wars doesn't have the depth of those sort of games, and for that reason might very well disappoint someone who is more focused on that aspect of the RPG.
This is not to say that Guild Wars sucks. Like I said, I've played it for years and still find it fun to this day. However, if I want to get a real roleplaying fix, I don't play GW. I play GW for online fun and grouping, pvp, online events, etc. For an MMO, it's also incredibly casual gamer friendly (easy to play for an hour and feel like you've accomplished something). However, you will find that you've pretty much maxed out your character (certainly in terms of levels, and in many cases in terms of skills, assuming you don't try to get every skill in the game and just go for the ones you like/use most) quite a bit before you finish the first campaign (much less all 3).
In short, if you want an in-depth RPG like the ones you originally mentioned (e.g. Morrowind), Guild Wars is not the way to go. It's a great game, but going in with that kind of expectation will just disappoint you.
I have to agree with blindem, GW is not for RPG fans. If you want that kind of game you can play Dungeon Runners for free. It has basically the same setup and game play.
I didn't think Eric5676 was looking for an MMO, but if he is I've been enjoying LOTRO. Before anyone jumps on the game, let me say that I played the demo and didn't think much of the game, either. I gave it a pass for a couple of months, but bought it ($20, what the heck, I'll take a chance) at the beginning of this month and I'm really enjoying it.
But for a single-player RPG, The Witcher gets my vote.

^^ Yup, an MMO isn't what I'm really looking for. Now I have some considerations here. Thankfully there are demoes for the Witcher and just about every other game mentioned in this thread. :)

Although it is a few years old I believe Oblivion is a pretty great RPG, it can be modded to whatever you want, and it lasts for ages (I've been trying to beat it for 1 1/2 years)

I took a break from the forums for too long. Been playing lots of LOTRO lately. The updates have been interesting with lots of new quests for the upper and lower level characters. My wife is even more of a LOTRO nut having maxed out her Captain at 50, she is now going for the varied gear specialized for her class. This game has quite a few women in it too..with built in voice chat, it can be verfied that they really are women.
Anyhow, I am Franko on the Silverlode server if anyone wants to say hi. We are waiting patiently for Conan. Anyone hear any buzz on that game?

Whorton, I have. Conan is going to be exciting. I hear they pushed back the launch date again to May though.

Do not get Gothic 3, I have it and all you'll get is a constant stream of crashes and bugs. As for good RPG's, if you don't care about how old they are, I would suggest a classic like Baldur's Gate or Planescape Torment. If you want something recent, go for The Witcher and Jade Empire (PC version...of course). As for a good upcoming RPG, you should try the PC port of Mass Effect which should be out May 2008.

Even after all this time and official and unoffical patches? That's too bad. I actually kind of liked the demo way back.
If I can get Gothic 3 for super cheap I might try it anyways, just for laughs.
I hear they're working on a part 4. Hopefully that game willl really be everything people had hoped part 3 would have been.

Definitely locked in on Mass Effect for the PC.

You could get Gothic 2 ;)
Not sure where there will be a copy of that game, though. Unless you're willing to buy the game from a store online wise.
Eric, did you choice a RPG yet? don't know if you bought your fix or are waiting for Mass Effect/Fallout 3.
And there is always Oblivion presented to you as an option, especially the well-known Shivering Isles expansion pack.
I'm assuming you live in the US, so here you go - http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage.jsp?skuId=8546246&st=oblivion&lp=6&type=product&cp=1&id=1188560190730
Includes The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion and the Knights of the Nine and Shivering Isles expansion packs

And Oblivion lasts forever since you can mod every factor in the game (except the engine itself)
